“Chavez Ravine Family Evicted; Melee Erupts”

The Los Angeles Times front page the morning after sheriff's deputies forcibly removed the Arechiga family from their home in Palo Verde on May 8, 1959. The photo caption describes Aurora Vargas, daughter of Manuel and Abrana Arechiga, being carried from the house by deputies. The images from that day became the defining record of the removal of the three communities.
